Jakob Mining Vehicles Chooses TYRI
Quality and design for vehicles operating in the toughest environments
In the mining industry, vehicles face extreme demands for durability, functionality, and safety. Harsh operating conditions involving vibration, freezing temperatures, intense heat, dust, darkness, sulphur, and other aggressive substances quickly break down conventional vehicles. These conditions challenge both TYRI and Jakob Mining Vehicles (JMV) to perform at their best.
JMV, a specialised vehicle manufacturer focused on the mining industry, follows a clear philosophy in its product development: only develop in-house what is truly necessary to withstand the extreme underground environment. For everything else, the company partners with suppliers capable of meeting the same high standards for performance, quality, and durability.
One of these partners is TYRI. Today, TYRI’s integrated front lighting plays a key role in JMV’s new specialised vehicle, Terra Charge.
The vehicle withstands harsh mining environments and delivers a distinctive visual identity.
“We try to be smarter than traditional vehicle development. We only develop the things that genuinely need to change in order to handle the mining environment. For everything else, we work with established suppliers who provide proven components,” says Will Wright, Sales Manager at JMV.

Looks like a car – but it is something entirely different
JMV’s previous vehicles used commercial vehicle platforms. The company extensively modified them for environments where standard work vehicles quickly wear out. The new Terra Charge, however, is based on a completely new concept. Everything has been built from the ground up, with the entire vehicle designed as a professional tool rather than a conventional vehicle.
“This is not really a car, even though it may look like one. It is a tool for people working in some of the most demanding environments in the world. The operators are wearing heavy gloves, helmets, and protective equipment, so every detail must be designed around those conditions,” explains Will Wright.
The vehicles are used for a wide range of applications in mines around the world – from transporting electricians and service technicians to supporting geologists working with safety, measurements, and underground inspections.
Lighting as both safety and identity
A key part of the vehicle development process was the front lighting. JMV needed a solution that met demanding technical requirements and strengthened the vehicle’s identity.
“The light signature was extremely important to us. We wanted to create a vehicle with its own unique character while achieving the functionality and durability required by the mining industry. TYRI delivered a solution in a way that no one else could,” says Will Wright.
Initially, JMV was looking for a custom-designed lighting solution, but when TYRI presented its new DLM-F1, the team quickly realised that it aligned perfectly with both their product concept and vehicle design.
TYRI developed the DLM-F1 as a standalone driving light with six integrated functions; High Beam, Low Beam, DRL (Daytime Running Light), Turn Marker, Side Indicator, and Position Light. For JVM, TYRI adapted the solution for full integration into the vehicle chassis.
“It was not the simplest solution from a cost perspective, but it was the right one. For us, it is about performance, durability, and creating the right lighting profile for the vehicle,” says Will Wright.
For Johannes Friberg, Business Development Manager at TYRI, the collaboration highlights how important lighting has become in modern specialised vehicles.
“Today, lighting is about much more than simply providing illumination. It is about safety, identity, and integration into the complete vehicle design. JMV had extremely high expectations regarding both performance and appearance, and together we have developed a solution that truly stands out,” says Johannes Friberg.
JMV vehicles currently operate in mines worldwide. The company continues development to meet the industry’s evolving demands. Looking ahead, JMV plans to explore additional TYRI solutions.
“When we find suppliers who truly understand our challenges, we want to continue developing that cooperation. Our vehicles have to perform in places where other solutions are simply not enough,” concludes Will Wright.
