TYRI in Research Projects on Lighting Design and Product Development

Lighting design in product development plays a crucial role in both efficiency and environmental impact. Therefore, a new research project at Linköping University explores how work lights on heavy machinery influence these areas. TYRI now supports this work with expert knowledge, advanced test facilities and long experience in lighting design.

TYRI Global R&D Director Christian Wadell explains:
“We have been developing lighting for over 50 years. Clearly a development where lighting is becoming increasingly integrated into both design and user experience. This project is a way for us to contribute with new knowledge that can ultimately lead to better, safer and more ergonomic work environments”.

A Doctoral Project with a New Focus

The project is part of a doctoral position at Linköping University. It is funded by the Lighting Foundation and driven by Torbjörn Andersson, Professor of Environmental Psychology at Lund University.

Because of this structure, the research can explore lighting in product development in depth.

Andersson explains the challenge:
“Light design in conjunction with product development differs greatly in many ways from other lighting. A big part of the knowledge and light literature that exists today is about lighting for fixed lighting, for example interior, architecture, film and stage. There is very little research in how lighting should be designed in conjunction with product development”.

This insight shows why the field needs more study and why this project matters.

TYRI’s Role in Moving Innovation Forward

TYRI strengthens the project with test labs, visualization software, and lighting equipment. In addition, the team shares practical knowledge gained from many years in the industry.

As a result, the research gains both scientific and real-world perspectives.

Wadell adds:
“As an industry partner, we want to be involved in pushing the development forward by offering our knowledge, lending out equipment and just being part of the development process. This is a concrete way for us to support the next generation of lighting design.”

TYRI will contribute about 300,000 SEK over five years. This commitment highlights the company’s long-term support for lighting research.
