Honesty is the Best Policy – TYRI’s Approach to Sustainability

“Sustainability communication comes with its challenges,” says PeO Axelsson, Marketing Manager at TYRI Sweden. “It’s a complex topic that invites a lot of opinions, and there’s always a risk of it sounding like empty promises.”

For years, TYRI has quietly worked on sustainability initiatives, learning valuable lessons along the way. Now, the company is ready to share its progress openly and honestly, paving the way for a more sustainable industry.

Being Transparent About the Journey

At TYRI, they don’t claim to have all the answers. They’re not sustainability experts – they’re experts in work lighting. As one of the largest players in the industry, producing nearly two million lamps annually, TYRI recognizes its responsibility to make a meaningful impact.

“We’re determined to drive progress in our industry,” says PeO Axelsson. “We know we won’t always get it right, but we believe that being transparent and learning along the way is what matters. Our goal is to avoid greenwashing and share our journey authentically. And yes, this is also about profitability – finding solutions that benefit both the environment, and our business ensures long-term sustainability.”

Innovation with Purpose

Innovation has always been a cornerstone of TYRI’s approach. By leveraging advancements in technology, TYRI develops lighting solutions that are not only cutting-edge but also more environmentally friendly. From reducing energy consumption to designing products with longevity in mind, TYRI aims to balance environmental responsibility with performance.

“We want to lead the conversation on sustainability,” explains Axelsson. “But we can’t do it alone – collaboration with customers and industry peers is essential.”

Backing Words with Actions

Credibility in sustainability means putting plans into action. TYRI has identified where their products have the greatest environmental impact, focusing on practical solutions with measurable results.

A closer look at their products revealed a key insight: while the production of a lamp accounts for only 10–20% of its lifetime CO2 emissions, a staggering 80–90% comes from energy consumption during use. This finding drives TYRI’s commitment to developing the most energy-efficient lighting solutions possible – a shift that’s especially impactful in regions with less sustainable energy sources.

Collaboration for Greater Impact

TYRI believes the most significant advances happen through partnership. While creating the most energy-efficient lamps requires higher upfront investment, TYRI works closely with customers to find ways to make these solutions viable.

“Our focus is on creating products that deliver environmental and economic benefits over their lifecycle,” says Axelsson. “When sustainability is both good for the planet and cost-effective, it becomes a win-win.”

To ensure their efforts remain credible, TYRI has outlined a clear and actionable three-year plan.

“Ambitious targets like ‘climate neutral by 2045’ are important, but we believe in starting with achievable, impactful changes,” concludes Axelsson. “This way, we can take meaningful steps forward while staying grounded in reality.”
